Artist Statement
Whether I am surrounding myself with collage materials, or taking a morning walk in search of an interesting frame, or blowing into a pipe dipped in molten glass; I am most engaged in creating while transforming, layering, curating, then observing and reflecting. The themes in my work include: nostalgia, the transience of life, moments of stillness and introspection.
My minimalistic photographic works, inspired by Michael Kenna, often include landscapes, close-up architectural and natural fragments. These pieces focus on simple yet intriguing subjects such as a lonely tree, a solitary snowball or a peaceful reflection in the water, capturing contrasting patterns, textures, and shadows.
My hand-blown glass vessels, and sculptural pieces include botanical elements, snow-frosted finishes, and organic movements of color inspired by natural landscapes. Being both liquid and solid, the molten glass medium brings both excitement and challenges as the process and results can be unexpected requiring an approach of letting go and trusting myself.
I create collages using antique book covers, recycled boxes, old handwritten letters, photographs, and other various art materials such as graphite, pastels, cold wax, and paints. The process involves ripping, arranging, and layering elements to craft compositions that reveal and conceal disparate parts. Acrylics and watercolors are added to create accents and lines that guide the viewer’s eye.
Complex but spontaneous, intuitive but structural, simple but unexpected, my art pieces are meant to evoke the viewer’s personal experiences and create pause— a meditation, through art.
